Every time an ESPA programme is launched, applications come down like rain. Entrepreneurs, startuppers and professionals rush to meet deadlines, gather supporting documents, find a consultant, understand exactly what they are asking for again and –if they manage– press “submit” before the budget is exhausted.
But that is wrong. A big mistake.
Substantive preparation for a financing tool starts much earlier. It starts when there is no programme on the horizon. When others “wait for something to come out”, you are building the file that will be first in. You are already shaping your strategy so that you do not simply write numbers but tell a story that scores 95+.
But what should I prepare when I do not know what will come out?
Let us be clear: all modern ESPA programmes (as well as most under the Development Law) are based on horizontal criteria. What are they?
Formal maturity (studies, budget, invoices, permits)
Financial health (turnover, EBITDA, staff)
Innovation and digital readiness (ERP/CRM systems, automation, ESG)
SWOT analysis and growth strategy
Investment rationale (with evidence, not wishes)
If you have these ready, it does not matter whether the programme opens in August or October. It does not even matter whether it is a voucher, grant or equipment subsidy. Because you are already in a position to put together a dossier that will be first in, pass assessment and be approved straight away.
The “First In – First Out” phenomenon
Many new programmes nowadays do not assess all dossiers, but only those that manage to be submitted before the available amount is exhausted. It is like handing out money in order of priority. Who gets in? Those who were ready in advance. Not those who remembered it in the last week.
The key is not the application. It is the strategy.
You do not go after ESPA because “something relevant to you has come out”. You go because you have a business objective, you have drawn up an investment plan and you are simply waiting for the right instrument to fund it. It is a different mindset. It is a different level of maturity.
For years, AFS has been working with clients on the methodology of dossier preparation, and the results are measurable: high scores, immediate approvals, low rejection rates and zero stress.
In practical terms, what does “I prepare from now” mean?
✔️ I have a complete business plan ✔️ I have calculated my budget and I know my needs ✔️ I know what staff I want to recruit or train ✔️ I have internal procedures that demonstrate maturity ✔️ I have a consultant who knows me and I do not need to explain what I do from the beginning
Conclusion:
Success in an ESPA programme is not random. It is the result of preparation. Not at the time the programme opens, but long before. Do not think “what will I do if something good comes out”. Put together your plan, organise yourself with a serious consultant, and when the programme opens, you simply run ahead of everyone else.
If you are serious about funding, then you start now. Yes, now. Even if nothing has been announced yet.
Because then you are not preparing a dossier. You are preparing your future.
