In every business, there is an elephant in the room. It does not snort, it does not trample offices — but it is there. It is the KAD. The Activity Classification Number. The most underestimated, overlooked and at the same time the most revealing indicator of what your business really is.
And if you think that KAD is just a technical matter for the accountant, think again. KAD tells the State what you do. It tells the authorities where you belong. It tells grant schemes whether you are “in” or “out”. But more importantly: it tells you where you are heading — or where you are hiding.
Why does KAD matter?
KAD is not just a label. It is the entrance to the “game”:
It determines your participation in funding programmes (ESPA, Development Law, InvestEU).
It directs tax obligations and reliefs.
It is the mirror of your activity. And often, that mirror is cloudy.
The classic trap: “Let’s add 20 KADs, something will stick”
A common myth is that the more KADs you have, the more “flexible” you are. Wrong. When everything is basic, nothing is. An abundance of KADs shows a lack of strategy, not variety.
How to carry out a realistic review:
Look at your actual activities over the last year. Where did turnover come from?
Check whether your main KAD reflects that activity. If not, you need a change.
Carry out an eligibility check for programmes. Often, you miss out on funding because your KAD simply… does not match.
Talk to your accountant, but do not stop there. Strategic review is your responsibility.
KAD as a strategic tool, not bureaucracy
If you are in services, for example you provide consultancy but declare a “retail trade” KAD, then you have a problem. Not because you are “doing something illegal”, but because you are sending the wrong signal:
You will not appear on the right lists.
You will not receive the correct reports.
You will not hit the right programmes.
AFS Tip:
Once a year, carry out a KAD audit. On your own or with an adviser. It is like a health check for your identity as a business.
Could it be that what you do… is not what you declare?
If your KAD shows a different direction from the one you are actually moving in, then you have simply “named” your business incorrectly. And as the saying goes: “The name makes the saint”. The right KAD makes the business.
Do not let the elephant hold you back. Put your KAD on the table and look it in the eye. That is where strategy begins.
