In the era of globalization, it’s natural to compare experiences:
How much does someone pay their accountant in Germany? How fast can a company be established in the Netherlands? How simple is VAT filing in the United Kingdom? How “friendly” are the tax authorities in the U.S. or Switzerland?
All these are interesting questions. But the essence lies elsewhere: Accounting is not merely a service. It is an institution. And this institution differs radically from country to country.
In some countries, accounting is procedural.
In Greece, it is critical.
In Germany, many filings are done through automated platforms. In the Netherlands, companies manage most processes through a single Digipoort account. In the U.K., a freelancer can submit their tax return alone with just a few clicks. In the U.S., systems work with standard deductions and software like TurboTax. In Switzerland, stability and institutional maturity make everything run almost… silently.
The accountant is not a cost. The accountant is a shield.
At AFS, we know this firsthand. Every declaration, every form, every action we take on behalf of a client carries the weight of our signature — and often the scrutiny of the authorities. In Greece, the accountant is the first to be blamed for an error, and the last to leave when a business faces trouble.
They are not a “service provider.” They are a partner in the journey — a co-responsible companion.
Comparison has value only when it is complete
When we say “in Germany I pay €19 per month for an accountant,” it’s worth remembering what we are paying for — and what we are not asking for. We don’t ask for a signature. We don’t ask for representation during an audit. We don’t ask for involvement in subsidy programs, technical offices, contracting, myDATA, or an AADE (Greek tax authority) that changes its interpretations every six months.
When we ask for all that, we are talking about a different role, a different responsibility, a different framework.
We grow together – not because we discount, but because we stand firm
AFS supports dozens of businesses that began as small ideas and are now healthy, profitable, and outward-looking. We didn’t approach them with promotional coupons. We embraced them with strategy, responsibility, and availability.
If your business needs a partner who stands by you from the very beginning — not just to “file returns,” but to help you steadily build your next step — then we are here.
Not as accountants from abroad. But as accountants of substance.
AFS #wegrowtogether – with responsibility.
