In every business, there is an elephant in the room. It doesn’t growl, it doesn’t stomp on desks — but it’s there. It is the Business Activity Code (KAD). The Activity Code. The most underestimated, overlooked, yet at the same time the most revealing indicator of what your business truly is.
And if you think the Business Activity Code is just a technical matter for your accountant, think again. The Code tells the state what you do. It tells the authorities where you belong. It tells the subsidies whether you’re “in” or “out.” But more importantly: it tells you where you are aiming — or where you are hiding.
Why does the Business Activity Code matter?
The Business Activity Code is not just a label. It is the entry into the “game.”
- It determines your eligibility for funding programs (ESPA, Development Law, InvestEU).
- It guides your tax obligations and reliefs.
- It is the mirror of your activity. And many times, that mirror is blurred.
The classic trap: “Let’s register 20 activity codes, something will work.”
A common myth is that the more activity codes you have, the more “flexible” you are. Wrong. When everything is essential, nothing is. An abundance of activity codes shows a lack of strategy, not variety.
How to run a realistic check:
- Look at your actual activities over the past year. Where did the revenue come from?
- Check if your main activity code reflects this activity. If not, you need a change.
- Check for eligibility in programs. Many times, you lose funding because your activity code simply… doesn’t match.
- Talk to your accountant, but don’t stop there. The strategic review belongs to you.
The activity code as a tool of strategy, not bureaucracy
If you are in the services sector, e.g., providing consulting but declaring an activity code of “retail trade,” then you have a problem. Not because you are “doing something illegal,” but because you are sending the wrong signal:
- Δεν θα φανείς στις σωστές λίστες.
- Δεν θα λάβεις σωστά reports.
- Δεν θα χτυπήσεις τα σωστά προγράμματα.
AFS Tip:
Once a year, run an activity code audit. On your own or with a consultant. It’s like the check-up of your identity as a business.
Could it be that what you actually do… is not what you declare?
If your activity code points in a different direction from where you are heading, then you have simply “named” your business wrong. And as tradition says: “The name makes the saint.” The right activity code makes the business.
Don’t let the elephant hold you back. Put your activity code on the table and look it in the eye. That’s where strategy begins.
